Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Santiago Mostyn as curator of the 14th edition of the project, taking place at art centres and collaborative venues throughout Gothenburg, from September 4–November 21, 2027.

Santiago Mostyn is an artist based in Stockholm who works within film, installation, and performance. His practice can be viewed as an ongoing visual research framework in which non-aligned histories and personal memory intersect. Mostyn grew up in Trinidad and Zimbabwe, received his BA from Yale University, and was the 2024–25 Logie Fellow at Harvard Radcliffe Institute.

Mostyn curated, together with Joa Ljungberg, The Moderna Exhibition: With the Future Behind Us (2018), a comprehensive presentation of artists connected to the Swedish art scene that reckoned with questions of cultural and spiritual identity. Together with Susanna Marcus Jablonski, Mostyn was commissioned to create Sweden’s first anti-racist monument, the result of a long-term civic initiative. The monument was inaugurated in Malmö earlier this month.

Regarding his appointment and the curatorial proposal for GIBCA 2027, Santiago Mostyn writes: “I appreciate the trust of the biennial team to develop a project that resists familiar thematic frameworks but at the same time is very focused on tracing the contours of a crucial new form of subjectivity. We’re approaching the process with subtlety, with openness, and a bit of a dare to ourselves to render things in the present tense.”

“We look forward to developing the coming biennial edition together with Santiago, whose artistic practice proposes new understandings of place. With a distinctly poetic tone, his projects attend to the current moment with the dual sensibility of both a guest and a host. We read his proposal for GIBCA 2027 as a response to the need to ground an understanding of our various realities in the practices of his peers, beyond the historical gaze and the speculative future.” — Ioana Leca, Artistic Director GIBCA

A project of an independent non-profit art centre, Röda Sten Konsthall, Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art is co-produced in dialogue with and across two neighbouring institutions: Gothenburg City Library and Göteborgs Konsthall.

An initial curatorial outline of the project will be presented publicly in Gothenburg on November 18, 2026.

The Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art is a project founded in 2001. A platform for the presentation of international contemporary art, GIBCA is also an important junction between local, national, and international discourses on issues of urgent collective interest. Each biennial consists of exhibitions and programme hosted by established art institutions in Gothenburg and the region of West Sweden, by independent initiatives, and in the physical and digital public realm. The biennial is also the facilitator of GIBCA Extended, an open network for contemporary art actors in the region of West Sweden, be it museums, galleries, artist-run initiatives or curatorial platforms, that programme at the time of the biennial and develop further the questions brought forward by the project.

Curatorial collaborations (2025–2001): Christina Lehnert; João Laia; Lisa Rosendahl; Nav Haq; Elvira Dyangani Ose; Katerina Gregos, Claire Tancons, Joanna Warsza and Ragnar Kjartansson in collaboration with Andjeas Ejiksson; Sarat Maharaj with co-curators Gertrud Sandqvist, Dorothee Albrecht, Stina Edblom; Celia Prado and Johan Pousette; Edi Muka and Joa Ljungberg; Sara Arrhenius; Carl Michael von Hausswolff; Ewa Brodin, Britt Ignell, Lasse Lindkvist.
