Modernism, San Francisco opens first posthumous survey of James Hayward

Modernism, San Francisco opens first posthumous survey of James Hayward

Working in Southern California, Hayward developed his practice in dialogue with the reductive tendencies of the Los Angeles art scene, including Minimalism and the L.A. Fetish Finish aesthetic.

Modernism, San Francisco brings together nearly four decades of work by James Hayward [1943–2026] in James HAYWARD: Works 1975–2013, the first exhibition devoted to the artist’s work since his passing earlier this year. Spanning the development of Hayward’s practice from the 1970s through the early 2010s, the retrospective offers an occasion to reconsider his sustained engagement with the monochrome and the material possibilities of paint. From the formal Automatic Paintings of the late 1970s to the densely worked monochromes of his mature practice, the exhibition examines Hayward’s sustained investigation of color, surface, gesture and the material possibilities of paint. For more than fifty years, Hayward pursued the monochrome not as a restrictive format but as a field of inexhaustible variation. More

These different perspectives form the starting point for Eva Schlegel’s artistic practice. For some time now, she has been examining how perception and immateriality shape our relationship with space. Working across sculpt…
